Treatment Options for Breast Cancer

We provide both surgical and non-surgical modes of treatment, and this will be determined on a case-by-case basis. These include:

  • Chemotherapy is a drug treatment to target and kill rapidly growing cancer cells.
  • Hormone therapy works by blocking or reducing the production of hormones that some breast cancers need to grow.
  • Targeted treatments use specialised drugs to attack specific molecules involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells.
  • Surgery removes cancerous tissue from the breast to eliminate the tumour and reduce the risk of recurrence.
  • Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to destroy any remaining cancer cells after surgery, typically targeting the breast, chest wall, or lymph nodes.

Breast Cancer Surgery Singapore

If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, our doctor will be able to provide a complete range of breast cancer surgery suitable for every individual case. We offer various types of surgery for breast cancer including breast lump removal (lumpectomy), partial/complete breast(s) removal (mastectomy), and breast reconstruction to restore a normal appearance of the breast, post-surgery.

The type of surgery will depend on the following factors:

  • The size of the cancer
  • The location of the cancer
  • The stage of the cancer
  • The size of one’s breasts
  • One’s overall health
  • One’s personal wishes

Possible Risks of Breast Cancer Surgery

Breast cancer surgery is a complex procedure that may result in some complications, including:

  • Problems with the anaesthesia
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Hematoma (accumulation of blood under the skin)
  • Seroma (an accumulation of fluid under the skin)

However, in the hands of an experienced surgeon, this will be unlikely and well-managed.

Recovering from Breast Cancer Surgery

Recovering after breast cancer surgery takes time and requires post-surgery care, such as:

  • Wound Care – Keep your incision clean and dry to minimise infection risk. For at least the first week after surgery, opt for sponge baths instead of showers.
  • Pain Management – Take your prescribed pain medication to manage discomfort and promote healing.
  • Diet – Eating a balanced, nutritious diet to help your body heal and recover. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods.
  • Smoking Cessation and Alcohol Limitations – Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as both can hinder healing and increase the risk of complications.
  • Self-Care – Ensure you get enough rest, relaxation, and stress management. Techniques like deep breathing or meditation can be beneficial.
  • Follow-Up Appointments – Regular check-ups with your doctor are essential for monitoring your progress, checking for any issues, and addressing any concerns you may have.

Treatment for Benign Breast Conditions

Unlike breast cancer, benign breast conditions are abnormalities in the breast tissue that are not life-threatening. These conditions include fibrocystic changes, fibroadenomas, breast cysts, adenosis, and fat necrosis.

While they are non-cancerous, benign breast conditions can still cause symptoms and discomfort such as breast pain, lumpiness, nipple discharge, and changes in breast texture. Fortunately, they can be managed through various approaches, including:

  • Fine Needle Aspiration – In suitable cases of a breast cyst or abscess, your doctor may perform a fine needle aspiration to drain the fluid from the cyst.
  • Oral Antibiotics – In cases of infections, such as mastitis, oral antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection and alleviate symptoms.
  • Breast Lump Removal – With some benign breast lumps, doctors may also recommend removing them as well.

Regardless of the type of breast condition, our team of experienced doctor, technologists and nurses is committed to providing the best possible care. From breast cancer treatment in Singapore to all other treatments, we strive to support our patients every step of the way.
